Following the signs of myth and history we will explore both ancient and contemporary Nemea with its famous vineyards and wineries.

The region of Nemea has been Greece’s most important red wine region for centuries. It used to be called Flision Pedion due to the ancient city of Fliountas. Near the modern town of Nemea exist the village of ancient Nemea, this well-known area since ancient times where Hercules killed the Nemean Lion, according to myth.

Therefore, let’s start an adventurous journey following the traces of myth and history…

Ancient Nemea!

The most important monument of the archeological site of Nemea is the sanctuary of Zeus (4th century B.C). Here we find the ruins of the magnificent temple with Doric, Ionic and Corinthian columns, the baths, the auxiliary buildings but also the stadium (320 B.C), where one of the four most important organized athletic games took place, The Nemean Games, in honor of Zeus. In the stadium you can still detect the starting line of the foot races as well as the arched gate through which the athletes used to enter the stadium.

The Archaeological Museum exhibits, among others, findings from the Mycenaean necropolis of Edinonia (16th-15th century BC). The interesting collection of gold Mycenaean jewelry stands out (Treasure of Edinonia).

It is necessary to visit one of the significant notable local wineries. There we will have the opportunity to become acquainted with the method of production of Nemeas’ famous wine. We will be able to walk into vineyards and taste Greek traditional snacks accompanied by great wine.

Full of knowledge, colors and scents we will be ready to visit the monastery of Our Lady of the Rock [Founded in the 17th Century (1631)] which is located in the middle of a steep and rocky mountain. Inside the remains of the monastery there’s a natural water tank which still exists today. It is believed that holy water flows from here, which during the years of Ottoman domination it was used to supply and refresh the priests and the warriors who used to find shelter in the monastery in the tumultuous time of great prosecutions.

On our way back, we say οur farewell to the beautiful vineyard spreading across the Holy Land, embracing the churches, the columns and the ancient temples. A magnificent environment!

On our return we are pleased with the beautiful vineyard spreading across the Holy Land embracing the churches, the columns and the ancient temples. A magnificent environment!

Nemea (/ˈniːmiə/; Ancient Greek: Νεμέα; Ionic Greek: Νεμέη) is an ancient site in the northeastern part of the Peloponnese, in Greece. Formerly part of the territory of Cleonae in ancient Argolis, it is today situated in the regional unit of Corinthia. The small village of Archaia Nemea (formerly known as "Koutsoumadi"[1] and then "Iraklion") is immediately southwest of the archaeological site, while the new town of Nemea lies to the west.

Here in Greek mythology Heracles overcame the Nemean Lion of the Lady Hera, and here during Antiquity the Nemean Games were played, in three sequence, ending about 235 BCE, celebrated in the eleven Nemean odes of Pindar.
